Most of us at some point in our life wish we could re-live our youth. We made mistakes. We made poor choices. We didn’t do things that we always wish we would have. How many of those things color our choices now? How many of the decisions we make now are because of decisions we made in our youth that we wish had never been made? How many of us get a chance to do things over?
Kaizaki is a 27 year old man trying to figure out what to do with his life. The job he landed after graduating high school was a “black company” (the worst kind of company that could be worked for) and he quit after only 3 months. Finding a job since then has proven difficult as they all want to know why he left his first job after only 3 months and are unwilling to give him a chance to prove himself.
Unable to pay rent on his own, his parents threatening to stop sending him money, no girlfriend and no friends to try and work through his problems with, Kaizaki has hit rock bottom. It is at just this point that a random guy shows up and offers him a chance. This man, Yoake, claims to work for a company called ReLIFE and offers Kaizaki a chance at rehabilitation by using a mysterious drug to return his body to that of a high school kid. In return, the company will cover all his living expenses for one year and at the end of the program will guarantee finding him a job.
Kaizaki agrees and is then enrolled in high school, again. He has one year to spend as a student. But fitting in can be more difficult than he anticipated. It’s been 8 years since he socialized with others, will he be able to change his ways and become the person he wants to be? Will he be able to keep it a secret from others that he is really 27? If anybody finds out the program will be cancelled. On top of that, when the program ends in one year, everybody will forget about him.
We all dream at some point about going back to high school. But we always imagine ourselves being in our high school aged bodies again. Automatically being in shape. However, Kaizaki soon learns that while his body looks like a high school boy, in reality he still has the body of a 27 year old man who hasn’t exercised in years. On top of that, a high school girl in his class seems to be after him, and that could spell trouble. This year of ReLIFE may not be as easy on him as Kaizaki thought it would be.
