Show Listing Last Updated: November 27, 2015

Part of my blogging is about Anime shows I watch, or in some cases turn off after a few minutes. Usually my posts only include clean shows, but occasionally I will include some that were just so bad I couldn’t even get through one episode, and even then generally only because I had seen enough good ones to complete a single post.

This page is a collection of the good Anime shows I have found. What do I mean by good? I mean clean Anime. This does not include shows that had a good story but was filled with naked girls. I also include “mostly clean” shows in which they occasionally include some questionable material, such as brief “panty shots”, but it’s not the main purpose of the show. I also don’t include the show if I get the feeling they are doing it excessively. For example, in Kaze no Stigma there are a few scenes in the 24 episodes where the wind has blown the girls skirt up or messed up her clothes a bit so her bra is showing. These were quick shots to get the point across and not lingering shots, again, this is why I included them, however, I do mark these as “mostly clean” since they are not completely clean. I also try to note what instances might be objectionable.

If you are looking for good clean, wholesome Anime I hope this list will help you find some good shows. Most shows on this list I really enjoyed watching. There are a few that were just okay, but I usually mention that in the summary. All the links are to thetvdb.com for more information about the show. All the artwork is also pulled from that site so thanks to them and all their contributors for supplying some great artwork (and in some cases just really high quality dvd box scans).

You can also check out the back-page, which lists other Anime shows that I have watched (or partially watched) that didn’t make the cut. Some of them are pretty close to clean, others – not so much. Mostly this list is for me to remember which shows didn’t make the cut and why.

If you want to know where you can go to watch these shows, check out this post on places to watch anime.

Update on 8/17/2014: Please note, I do not specifically check for language. However, as has been mentioned to me some parent’s are letting their kids watch shows recommended by me, I will make an effort to point out shows where I notice an excessive amount of cursing. That is sometimes difficult as often when I watch in Japanese with English subtitles, the curse words are translated as non-cursing (or maybe they just throw some in in the English language version). Please keep an eye on what is being watched in your house. I do my best to critique the content of the shows properly, but on second watchings I have at times noticed that I have missed stuff. And as always, I appreciate any feedback about things I might have missed so I can update the listings. If only this could be a full-time job I would be able to make sure everything is 100% accurate, but that would mean having even less of a social life than I do now.

I am twelve and I have watced all but a few episodes of fairy tail my parents did not like what they said and episode two of sword art online it swore like no end

  3. August 17, 2014 at 4:23 pm

Hi Landon, sorry about the swearing. I just watched SAO episode two again with the subtitles and English both going and most of the cursing in the spoken English did not exist in the subtitled version that I had originally watched. Though, to be honest I am not normally paying attention to there being any foul language. Because most of the shows I watch are subtitled the cursing is often translated differently and when it is there it doesn’t stand out as much reading it instead of hearing it yelled. I will update the notes at the top to mention that I am not specifically watching out for language, just visual stuff.

In case you haven’t gotten to season four of Fairy Tail yet (roughly episode 150 and up), they get a lot more risqué. In the past few weeks I have started working through the last fourth “season” and they have been showing a lot more skin and wearing revealing outfits. I imagine your parents probably wouldn’t appreciate the clothing either. Glad to hear your parents are keeping an eye on what you watch.

I will try to keep the language in mind during my reviews. Maybe I can find a way to auto-search the subtitles for cursing as a final check before posting. Hope you find some good shows you like. It has been awhile since I watched some of these, but I recall them being very kid friendly: Clannad, Oban Star-Racers, Spider Riders, and Wagnaria!!.

It’s really encouraging to find a list of clean animes reviewed by a Christian. I appreciate it a lot. I have tried several times in the past to watch different animes, and while I was rather unsuccessful in some attempts, I have managed to find a few really good ones (mostly ones you have already mentioned as well). I’m sure your list will help me out greatly! I do wonder, however, where I could find some of these? I noticed that not all of them are on Netflix or Hulu. Thanks!

  6. January 23, 2015 at 2:59 pm

Hey Kelly. Hope my list does help you out. I would be interested in any you have watched that would be good additions to this list. On my next page update (hopefully later this month) I will be including a number of places to find these to watch online with some details on costs and what they offer. Off the top of my head though, Netflix and Hulu you already mentioned, but you can also find a lot on Crunchyroll and Funimation’s streaming service sites.

    Thanks!

Well, one I really enjoyed was Okami-San and Her Seven Companions (which is on Netflix). There is only 1 season with 12 episodes, 23 minutes each, which makes it a pretty easy watch. The main character wears a very… interesting outfit that I personally don’t understand at all, there may be a little skin-showing-off, there is one episode devoted to a beauty pageant in which all the girls end up wearing swimsuits (some of which are quite revealing), and (the main problem with it) the narrator repeatedly refers to the two main characters “flat chests.” The first episode is a very good litmus test. Having said all that, it isn’t something I’d suggest to any kids.

I also greatly enjoy Totally Spies! (completely clean except for a very mild amount of violence, and lots of teen drama) which may or may not be classified under anime. The lines get kinda blurred around Digimon (which I also enjoyed when I was younger, though rewatching it now makes me realize it’s actually got some dark things in it) and others of that sort.

I absolutely loved Sword Art Online (excepting that one episode, of course, and there was another one my brother and I had to turn off/skip ahead in, too), and Ouran High School Host Club as well!

There have been a few others, maybe, that I enjoyed a few years ago, but it was long enough ago that I couldn’t promise they were actually any good. And I’m pretty sure they were all pretty focused on the love aspect.

That’s all I’ve got, though I’d be interested in your take on Attack on Titan if you’ve seen it. A couple of guys I know really love it, but the first episode I saw was very graphic.

  8. January 24, 2015 at 9:39 pm

I do remember watching Okami-san, but do not remember why I never reviewed it (which is why I recently started the back page). It has been awhile so I’ll probably watch it again to refresh my memory. Haven’t seen Totally Spies! but the animation style looks a lot like Wakfu (also on Netflix). Haven’t decided wether or not to review it since it technically isn’t Anime per-se, since it is also a Canadian show rather than a Japanese show. Not that it is a requirement that it be from Japan, but it is also definitely a kids show as well.

I have seen about half of Attack on Titan. I liked the concept of the show. It was clean up as far as I had watched (I think up to around episode 14), though as you said it was extremely, extremely bloody. I finally gave up not just because of the graphic nature of it but because they started to make one of the, putting it politely, heartless jerks a main character. I despised his personality so much I couldn’t stand to keep watching it. Based on the fact it made it up to episode 14 without any sexual content it is probably clean all the way through.

Hikaru no Go should be listed here.
It’s aimed at younger audiences, and although I’ve only seen ~30 episodes, but it’s very clean from what I can tell.
The only exception to this I’ve seen: Hikaru buys some manga, and it has a mildly sugguestive cover, but is only seen for about a second as he pays for it.

Very good all around show, it’s about the game Go, and does have a ton of psycological stuff to it.

Thanks for the tip, I’ll add it to my queue of things to watch (which is getting ludicrously long, curse those shows with over 200 episodes each) and get it up on the list asap (might take awhile).

Look up the anime “RWBY” (pronounced ‘Ruby’). That one is clean, (minus some slight cleavage, which I didn’t even notice until my third watching of it), and quite hilarious.

Oh, and RWBY is the ONLY American made anime to date that was succesfully exported to Japan!

One last thing: RWBY’s first season has some very short episode (~5 minutes) and as long as ~15 minutes. Season 2’s episodes are no shorter than 12 minutes each.

Attack on Titan is a great show and is really clean, but it does have a lot of bloody scenes. I haven’t seen the second season, so I can’t say if it stays clean. Another anime is Angelic Layer the only thing in it, is a few bath tub scenes, that don’t show anything. The show is cute and aimed for young girls.

Put “Your lie in april” in there i just watched it, its really clean other than a few swear words 🙂

  18. June 25, 2015 at 7:31 am

I watched ‘Your lie in april’ and while the show itself was clean (I think there was maybe one super-brief panty shot in the very first episode when they meet and he takes a picture of her on his phone), the intro or outro (forget which one) shows both the main characters naked. I don’t recall anything else, but it was definetely enough to keep it out of the clean list with just that. If it was brief, or kind of obscured I probably would have let it pass with a note about it, but it was pretty obvious and lasted for a number of seconds. 🙁

It is, however, a really good show. I enjoyed it thoroughly, just couldn’t call it clean.

  19. June 25, 2015 at 7:35 am

@James, Good tip on RWBY. I think I watched about 2/3 of it. I personally got a little bored with it so never finished, mostly because the animation style just wasn’t my taste. The story itself was pretty interesting. I’ll make a note to finish up the first season and get a review done.

@Rachel, Attack on Titan was another one I didn’t finish but have heard from a few people that it is clean (like you said, amazingly bloody, but clean) so it is also on my list to finish and review. The blood was a bit much for me, but really it was the the head of the something corps, I think Levi?, that made me stop watching. He pissed me off so much every time he was on screen I wanted to throw him over the wall to be eaten.

Daniel, I want to take a moment to thank you for doing this. I’ve already recommended this webpage to a lot of my friends. It is really refreshing to know that there is a place I can go to that can lead me to anime that won’t have me (or my friends) recoiling in disgust after five minutes into a new anime.
Also, I hope you can take the time to finish RWBY; yes, the animation is different from standard anime, but the story and humor are quite enjoyable to me (and the animation does improve in the second season). The third season starts in a few months too.

I have two more anime that I am wondering if you could check out when you have the time. The first is “Kurau: Phantom Memory”. In my opinion, it is “mostly clean”; there is one scene in the third or fourth episode where the main character removes her clothes to change, but she is facing away from the camera. There are also several instances where the main character is glowing so much that even if they aren’t wearing anything, you don’t see the lady-parts, and that doesn’t happen frequently. It is a very under-rated sci-fi style anime with a fascinating and emotional storyline .
The second one is called “Solty Rei”, also a sci-fi anime, but also something of a “cowboys with motorcycles” theme. I haven’t seen this one in a while, but I remember enjoying it a great deal. However, I do vaguely remember there being some foul language.
Let me know what you think. Thanks again for what you do!

Oh, and a third one I just remembered: Fate/Stay Night: Unlimited Blade Works 2014 and 2015. There is one scene in season one that I remember with a character taking a bath, but other than that it is clean (might also be some foul language here or there, but very sparsely, if I recall).

Hi Daniel! First, I want to thank you for the awesome selection and thorough reviews on animes inasmuch that you are sensitive to all aspects that may offend anyone even if it doesn’t necessary offend you. Very few people have that gift and I think it’s very respectable.

For Ouran Host though, it may be good to mention that the main character’s father is a transvestite and comes in some episodes. There is also an episode where all the customer girls and Renge dress in bikinis at the beach.

Finally, have you seen Chiko Heiress of the Phantom Thief (also called Daughter of Twenty-Faces)? I haven’t seen it in a long time (Crunchyroll eventually pulled it off of their viewing list), but I’m fairly certain that it’s clean save for possibly subtitle language. Another anime that I know is completely clean is La Corda d’Oro (It’s in a school setting most of the time focusing on music and playing famous classical music. There’s a romance atmosphere, but no characters even kiss throughout the whole thing). Samurai 7 might have some language (I don’t quite remember since language can be fairly usual in anime minus the f-word), but it’s fairly clean and a very interesting watch too on these 7 samurai being hired to protect a village from a group of bandits.

There are also a lot of Hayao Miyazaki movies that are fairly clean that would be in addition to the ones you already have (the wind rises, up from poppy hill, etc), but some others are The Secret World of Arrietty, Porco Rosso, Castle in the Sky, Ponyo…Well, the list goes on. In Howl’s Moving Castle is a pivotal classic based on a young adult book with the same name, but there’s one scene where Howl is in a towel and it slips off when he’s helped up the stairs and you see an outline of his backside for 2 seconds at most.

I probably know of more, but I think I’ve suggested too many as is. xD

HI. Sorry about the weird name. i don’t like putting my name on the internet. I have been looking for some new anime to watch as I am just starting to watch anime. For a really long time I have LOVED the drawing style, and would have watched it except i didn’t know which ones were acceptable, and didn’t want to start one that wasn’t. Thank you so much for making this website! I can’t wait to start watching! I have only seen one anime, and i thought it might be nice to add. Its called Kimi Ni Todoke. I think it’s appropriate. It might be slightly scary for little kids at parts, just because the main character is supposed to look intimidating, and resemble a character from a popular horror movie, even though she is really nice. The other questionable thing is that one of the characters first dates a college student and then a teacher and there is a small amount of cussing. There may have been other things that were implied that i didn’t get, too. Other than that its perfectly good. Oh, Grave of the Fireflies is also good. Its by Hayao Miyazaki. There is a little blood at one part but that’s it. It is very sad, just so you know.

Thanks for the comment! I have actually watched Kimi ni Todoke season 1, I haven’t watched season 2 yet and I had watched it before I started reviewing them so I really need to watch it again with the critical eye before I post a review of it. I will also keep an eye out for Grave of the Fireflies.

Hi! Thank you for being so honest with your content description! I think ppl should know everything they are watching before they watch it. Also, Idk if these classify as 100% anime, but I recommend the movie Ponyo, and the series Avatar. 🙂 Again, thank u!!

Okay, scratch “Solty Rei” off my previous suggestions list. I re-watched part of it recently, then stopped when I realized it was NOT as clean as I remembered it to be. Sorry about that.

Hi, I really appreciate your site. I had almost given up on the genre, as most anime and manga have had too much fan service.

    Thank you.

I really appreciate the time you’ve taken to make this list. I was happy to find clannad and fairy tail on here. I would recommend listing “Shaman King” as well. I’m not sure about the subbed version, but I know that the dubbed version is very clean and teaches some good basic morals about friendship (it was a favorite of mine when I was younger). Also I’d love to see FullMetal Alchemist added on here. There are a few gory fighting scenes but other than that it’s clean… I may be wrong, but I’m pretty sure that one can be found on netflix. I know you’ve probably got lots of recommendations and shows to review, but I just thought I’d throw these out there.

I think that most anime shows with the best diologue and keeps you interested in the story has the unclean stuff in them. I’m glad I have the talent to write my own anime fanfiction with interesting diologue and keeping it clean as well. I only watch Pokemon which is my most favorite and all clean show except for the banned episodes of Pokemon. Kudos to whoever put a stop to making those types of themes or I never would’ve watch Pokemon to begin with. I honestly don’t care about the ratings. The Boondocks unfortunately has unclean themes in it as well.

Hey, thanks for the list! It is SO helpful! If it doesn’t bother you when people do this, I would like to recommend the anime Kaleidostar. I thought it was amazing! I believe it only swears maybe twice in all of it. The only thing about that one, is that it does take place at a circus, so some of the costumes aren’t that modest, but it is not as bad as what you would see at a beach or pool. I think this is one of my favorite anime! Thank you, again!

Usagi Drop (Bunny Drop) is just about the sweetest slice-of-life story you’ll ever see. Not the manga – the anime. Also, check out Bamboo Blade. It looks like the kind of show that would have some objectionable content (cute HS girls’ sports antics) but it’s actually clean, funny, and very human.

Thank you so much for having this list! By myself, it usually takes me several weeks to pin down a genuinely clean anime.
Some other clean anime I’d recommend are K-On (high school girls in a band/ makes you feel good about life), Mushi-shi (hard to describe, but it’s deep and intriguing), 5 Centimeters Per Second (missing childhood friendships), and Barakamon (an ornery calligrapher adjusting to living in the countryside).

Thank you SO MUCH for this 🙂
You have no idea how much this means to me 🙂 I started with Amnesia, and wasn’t sure which to go onto considering my standards.
My friends suggested Amnesia, and yeah… They told me about Free, Rwby, and this other one with Cheesy.. I think it’s about a cat. But I hope I can watch them.
thank you for this list! It’s perfect to help me find more animes that are ‘safe and clean’
    Thank you again! 🙂

Thank you so much for this Daniel. I’m a believer who loves anime but who also wants to please his Savior so lists like these are so helpful to me. Have you ever seen Steins; Gate? One of my favorites and rather clean with some minor caveats.

HI! I’ve never posted on something like this, but I’m hoping to find some help. I’m a Christian who enjoys Anime. And I have a few shows that I am wondering about. Okay, here we go
    1 OnePiece
    2 Soul Eater
    and
3 Tokyo Goul (I think I spelled that right)
I anyone has seen these or have any suggestions. I would love to know!!

  39. May 5, 2016 at 8:56 am

I have heard that One Piece is clean, but have only gotten a half dozen episodes into it. So far it is clean but for a show this long I usually try to get a few dozen episodes reviewed before posting something.

Soul Eater and Tokyo Ghoul I haven’t watched at all, though Netflix lists the rating of Soul Eater as TV-14, which usually means inappropriate content. Wether that is sexual or just gore, who knows.

wow!! thank you so much daniel!! You’ve been a great help! Also (I should have put these two in my first question but I forgot) Have you seen Assassination Classroom and Blue Exorsist. Have you heard of either of these?

  41. May 9, 2016 at 6:59 am

I have seen the titles, but have never watched Assassination Classroom or Blue Exorcist. The descriptions didn’t sound up my ally.

Thank you so much for this list! it has really helped me with finding good anime that doesn’t make me feel super uncomfortable and weirded out. I really enjoyed Sands of destruction and Angel Beats. Although, Angel Beats was super sad! Have you heard of Arata the Legend,Kobato or K-On? One of my friends recommended these saying they were clean but her definition of “clean” is different than mine.

  44. May 25, 2016 at 3:51 pm

Hi Joy. Crunchyroll shows that I watched all of Arata the Legend, but since I didn’t review it I am guessing there was something inappropriate in it. Wether it was extremely inappropriate or just one scene that took it out of the running while still enjoying it enough to watch I cannot remember. I haven’t watched K-On yet as it hasn’t been available to watch on my normal sites, though it does look like it would be (mostly) clean based on other comments and ratings I see on it. Ditto for Kobato (though I hadn’t heard of it until now).

I haven’t updated the list lately (this year) but have a few things on the burner to get reviewed and posted (clean, just have to write them up).

Thanks for the help! I recently watched this super cute movie called Patema Inverted. It’s a little bit slow but completely clean and visually beautiful.

    TSURITAMA!

*Cough cough* Sorry for that outburst. I am so HAPPY and thankful to God that another Christian is looking for clean anime ^_^ It makes me feel happy seeing this list of good clean anime. Uh…just some advice. STAY AWAY FROM BLACK BUTLER! and also please add Tsuritama to the list! I just finished the whole season: It is clean and there are only maybe just a few swear words. It’s only once in some episodes so it’s majority clean and the characters will make you want to keep them forever! Haru will give you cavities from all his sweetness! XD And even if you don’t like sweets, you will love Haru! Also the storyline is comical and yet develops so well and at points it just tears at your heart without realizing it! XD Just thought I mention it. Anyways. Thanks for the list and continue being careful of what you watch. God bless you and your parents!

Hi I am 12 and just want a clean no cussing non dirty anime that if my parents watched they would be ok with it my family is a Cristian family. Most of my best friend talk nonstop about anime and I really want to watch anime to because it sounds really cool.

  49. August 12, 2016 at 8:53 am

Hi Mallory. A few that I would recommend: Non Non Biyori, Last Exile (only season 1, season 2 not clean), From Up on Poppy Hill, Sands of Destruction, and Squid Girl.

Kanon and Clannad are also really good, these two have some swearing but I believe it was minimal. I list these two separately because they can get emotionally heavy, but are exceptionally good. I think your parents would enjoy watching these with you as well. If you can’t find these two online to watch for free, then Kanon can be found on Amazon for cheap (make sure you get the “SAVE” edition, it’s the same thing just repackaged a lot cheaper). Clannad is extremely popular so it is still rather pricey to buy.

Most things on this list I would say are fine (cursing is always iffy because I don’t always pay attention to that unless it is excessive, especially on subtitled shows). But every family has their own rules of what is acceptable so I always say have your parents involved. Having started watching some American TV again recently, I would say everything on this list is cleaner than Prime Time TV. It’s sad what passes for a “family” tv show now days.

You should watch and put Hunter x Hunter, D-Gray Man, and Nabari no Ou up there. You’d love them and there perfectly clean! There probably the best animes (in my opinion) that I’ve seen so far. You should check em’ out! 😆 ^-^
