Article History

Rockumentation keeps a history of article content changes so editors can review previous saves, compare versions, and restore older content when needed.

Article history is available from the article action menu when you have edit access. It focuses on changes to the article body so you can understand what changed and recover earlier content if necessary.

What Article History Is For

  • Review what changed between saves.
  • Compare the current article to an earlier version.
  • Restore content that was removed or rewritten.
  • Understand who made a change and when it happened.

Opening Article History

To review previous changes, open an article and use the action menu in the top-right corner. If you can edit the article, you will see an Article History option.

The history window lists recorded changes with the date and time, the person who made the change, and the source of the change. Most edits made directly through the editor appear as Manual in the source column.

Tip

If the history list shows a Current label, that entry matches the article content exactly as it exists right now.

Comparing Changes

Selecting a history entry opens a comparison view so you can inspect what changed. The comparison includes a visual diff that highlights removed, added, and changed content.

Two comparison modes are available. Against Current compares the selected saved version to the article as it exists now. Against Previous shows exactly what changed in that single save.

When you are reviewing a history entry, you can move backward and forward through the available changes without leaving the comparison view.

Restoring a Previous Version

If the article's version is not locked, the comparison view includes a Restore This Version button. This replaces the current article content with the content from the selected history entry.

Restoring does not erase the newer content from history. The restore is saved as a new change, which means the restore itself can be reviewed later and, if needed, reversed by restoring a different history entry.

Permissions and Limits

Article history is available to people who have Edit access to the article. Locked versions can still have their history reviewed, but earlier content cannot be restored until the version is editable again.

The history list shows recent recorded changes. If an article has a large amount of history, only the most recent entries appear in the picker.
